Coffee
Wild coffee plants, probably from Kefa (Kaffa), Ethiopia, were taken to southern Arabia and placed under cultivation in the 15th century. One of many legends about the discovery of coffee is that of Kaldi, an Arab goatherd who was puzzled by the strange antics of his flock. About 850 ce Kaldi supposedly sampled the berries of the evergreen bush on which the goats were feeding and, on experiencing a sense of exhilaration, proclaimed his discovery to the world.
Inside the parchment, side-by-side, lie two beans, each covered separately by yet another thin membrane. The biological name for this seed skin is the spermoderm, but it is generally referred to in the coffee trade as the silver skin.![]()

Every trip we are on the hunt for the best Macadamia nut Latte and Kai Coffee was the winner for Waikiki beach!! You could tell they were going to be good when the line was 15-20 people deep 15 mins after opening. With all the standard coffee and espresso offerings they also had plenty of food options to go with the caffeine fix. We stuck strictly to the latte and swapped over to the macadamia nut milk which put the entire cup over the top!! Best part about Kai coffee is the have the macadamia nut syrup for sale so you can mimic at home if you so desire. We didn't do that we can enjoy it that much more on our next visit! I wasn't always like this. I used to spend silly amounts of money on sturdy brown bags of whole-bean, single origin, locally roasted coffee at the gourmet market down the street. I would scowl after sipping an inadequately poured espresso shot pulled by an inexperienced barista if the taste was a little too bitter, the crema a little too thin. I waited fifteen minutes in the morning for a pour-over at a coffee house in my old neighborhood of Fort Greene, Brooklyn. When I spent a semester in Italy during my senior year in college, I made sure to follow local customs—to never order a cappuccino after 10 a.m., to stand with confidence at the local cafe counter as I downed my umpteenth espresso of the day, perfectly paired with a rum-soaked baba or, in most cases, a cigarette.

Kai Coffee has good vibes all around. They're located in the center of Waikiki and tailor well to tourists. Not sure if there is any parking nearby but that's Waikiki for you. Lots of seating but this cafe is constantly busy! Thankfully, I went at a time that there wasn't anyone else in line. A rare occasion at Kai Coffee for sure. There was a parade on Kalakaua so that could've contributed it. No restroom in the cafe that I'm aware of. WiFi may be available but I'm not certain. My boyfriend and I loved our drinks. I got an iced oatmilk latte. The espresso is nice and smooth, but strong in coffee flavor. Very balanced. I could taste the care and quality in my drink. The staff is super nice. They embodied the "aloha spirit" and whipped up the drinks quickly. The barista who took my order had a lot of suggestions and was patience in addressing my indecisiveness. Super chill people!
