Expand Your Digital Library

For bookworms and avid readers, the digital world offers numerous avenues to access literature, audiobooks, comics, and magazines without spending a dime. Leveraging library resources and public domain archives unlocks a universe of reading material.

Your Library Card: The Ultimate Free Reading Pass

Modern public libraries offer robust digital collections accessible through dedicated apps. A valid library card is the key.

  • Libby (by OverDrive): This is the most widely used app for borrowing digital content from public libraries in North America and beyond. Libby provides access to thousands of ebooks, audiobooks, and often magazines, curated by your local library. Its features are designed for a seamless reading and listening experience, including offline downloads, progress syncing across devices, customizable text display, adjustable audiobook playback speed, sleep timers, and bookmarking/highlighting. Libby notifies users when holds become available. While sending books to Kindle devices is supported, this feature is currently limited to U.S. libraries. Libby is completely free to install and use, with no subscription fees or late fines. Over 90% of North American public libraries use the OverDrive platform that powers Libby.
  • Hoopla: Another popular service offered by many public libraries (including in Canada ), Hoopla provides instant access (no holds) to a wide range of digital media, including ebooks, audiobooks, comics, music, movies, and TV shows. Libraries typically set a monthly borrow limit per cardholder (e.g., 10 items per month or 6 items per month ). Hoopla also offers "BingePasses" that grant unlimited access to specific collections for 7 days with a single borrow.
