The Theory of Stupidity

1. The Core Argument: Stupidity vs. Evil

We often think of evil as the greatest threat to society. However, Bonhoeffer argued that while we can fight evil, protest it, or use force against it, we are defenseless against stupidity.

  • Evil is self-limiting: It often carries the seeds of its own destruction because it makes people uneasy.

  • Stupidity is immovable: You cannot reason with a "stupid" person because they are not acting on a lack of intellect, but on a surrender of their independent faculty.

"Against stupidity we have no defense. Neither protests nor force can touch it. Reasoning is of no use. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be disbelieved — indeed, the fool can counter by criticizing them, and if they are undeniable, they can just be pushed aside as trivial exceptions." — Dietrich Bonhoeffer12

2. Stupidity as a Social Phenomenon34

Crucially, Bonhoeffer believed5 that stupidity is not a cognitive defect, but a moral one. There are people with high IQ6s who are "stupid" and people with little education who are "wise."

Stupidity occurs when a person allows themselves to be overwhelmed by a social or political movement. Under the influence of rising power—whether it’s a political regime, a cult, or a radical ideology—people surrender their individual autonomy. They become tools.

How it Works:

  1. The Loss of Independence: The person becomes so dazzled by the power or "glory" of a movement that they lose their capacity for independent thought.

  2. The Slogan Mindset: They stop processing facts and start speaking in slogans. They aren't "thinking" anymore; they are simply broadcasting the group’s dogma.

  3. Irrationality: Because they have given up their internal compass, they are incapable of seeing contradictions in their own behavior.

3. The Danger of the "Fool"

The danger lies in the fact that the "stupid" person is often self-satisfied. Unlike the evil person, who might feel guilt or a need to hide, the fool is convinced they are doing the right thing. This makes them easily irritated and prone to becoming dangerous if they feel their "truth" is being challenged.

In this state, a person is capable of committing any evil—not because they are inherently malicious, but because they have lost the ability to distinguish between right and wrong for themselves.

4. The Only Solution

How do we overcome collective stupidity? Bonhoeffer was pessimistic about the power of instruction or education. Since stupidity is a moral/social problem rather than an intellectual one, it cannot be solved by simply teaching someone more facts.

The cure for stupidity is an act of liberation, not instruction.

  • Internal Liberation: A person must decide to reclaim their own conscience.

  • External Liberation: In many cases, the "spell" of stupidity is only broken when the external power structure that feeds it collapses.
